India has introduced a new sports governance law aimed at fixing long-standing problems in how sports are managed across the country. For years, issues like lack of transparency, political interference, weak accountability, and limited athlete representation have affected the growth of Indian sports. This new law seeks to change that system from the ground up.
Under the new framework, national sports federations are required to follow stricter governance norms. These include fixed tenures for office bearers, limits on executive committee sizes, and mandatory representation of athletes in decision-making bodies. The idea is to ensure that those who play the sport have a voice in how it is run.
A key feature of the law is the creation of a dedicated sports tribunal. This body will handle disputes related to elections, selections, and governance, offering faster resolution instead of years-long court cases.
The law also strengthens oversight by introducing independent checks to prevent mismanagement and conflicts of interest. Overall, this reform aims to professionalise India’s sports ecosystem, protect athletes’ rights, reduce administrative politics, and build a transparent system focused on performance, fairness, and long-term sporting excellence.
