Geo or Profit? Why Trump is softening toward Pakistan!

In recent weeks, former President Donald Trump has adopted a noticeably more conciliatory posture toward Pakistan something many observers say stems from a mix of geopolitics and profit motives. According to the IndiaTV explainer, among the chief drivers is a desire to revitalize U.S. economic ties with Pakistan, particularly in energy and trade sectors. The July 2025 trade agreement between the two countries, which granted Pakistan better access in key sectors like oil and industrial exports, marks a clear shift.

Strategically, Washington sees value in bolstering Pakistan as a counterbalance in South Asia against China, especially if India continues to resist U.S. overtures. Trump’s shift is also driven by frustration with India’s reluctance to yield on tariffs and other issues which has strained Indo-U.S. ties and made Pakistan a more tempting partner again.

Still, the pivot isn’t unconditional. The U.S. continues to emphasize counterterrorism cooperation, defusing tensions with India, and ensuring Pakistan doesn’t slide back to supporting militant groups. The balancing act will define how far this thaw goes on Trump’s watch, and whether it reshapes South Asia’s diplomatic dynamics meaningfully.
