Google announced a significant geographic expansion for its AI-powered browser assistant. Previously restricted to the United States, Gemini in Chrome is now rolling out to desktop and iOS users in three major new markets. Built on the Gemini 3.1 model, the integration appears as a dedicated side panel that allows for a "two-way conversation" with the browser about the page currently being viewed.
Key Features of the Regional Expansion
• Multilingual Support (India): Recognizing India's linguistic diversity, Google has launched the feature with support for eight Indic languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil.
• Contextual Intelligence: Users can click the "Ask Gemini" sparkle icon to summarize long articles, extract key facts from data-heavy pages, or compare products across open tabs without leaving their current view.
• Google App Integration: The expansion includes the ability to connect Gemini with other Google services like Gmail, Drive, and Maps, enabling it to pull personal context (like flight times or document details) into the browsing experience.
• Nano Banana 2.0: Along with the side panel, users in these regions now have access to "Nano Banana," a local on-device AI tool for quick image editing and text refinement directly within Chrome.
Availability & Limitations
• Subscription Tiers: Currently, the full suite of Gemini features in Chrome is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
• "Auto Browse" Status: While the US version has begun testing "Auto Browse" (the ability for Gemini to perform tasks like booking appointments on your behalf), this feature is currently excluded from the India, Canada, and New Zealand rollout as Google continues to refine regional safety and privacy guardrails.
• Platform: The feature is live on Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS, with a mobile version currently rolling out for iOS users.
