Hamas says it’s ready for ceasefire but demands full end to Gaza war

Hamas has signalled it is “ready and serious” about negotiating a ceasefire with Israel, but only if any agreement ensures a complete end to the war in Gaza, according to Taher al‑Nunu, a senior Hamas official. Al‑Nunu confirmed a Hamas delegation would meet with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss a U.S.–backed plan.

Earlier on July 1, former President Donald Trump announced that Israel had agreed to terms for a 60‑day ceasefire, urging Hamas to accept the proposal. The draft agreement includes humanitarian aid commitments, a temporary Israeli withdrawal, and the phased release of hostages. While Israel has signalled agreement, Hamas has yet to formally accept the offer, demanding more robust assurances.

The war, now entering its 21st month, has resulted in over 56,000 Palestinian and more than 1,700 Israeli deaths. Recent Israeli airstrikes have continued, with at least 14 Palestinians killed on July 2, including civilians in declared safe zones.

Despite the dire humanitarian crisis and intense international pressure, deep distrust persists: Hamas seeks a permanent cessation with full Israeli withdrawal, while Israel demands Hamas’ disarmament and hostages’ return. Talks between mediators and Hamas are ongoing, but key hurdles remain unresolved.
