India’s diverse wedding cultures never fail to surprise-and Meghalaya’s Khasi tribe is proof! In this unique matrilineal society, after marriage, grooms don’t take their brides home-instead, they shift to their wife’s house!
This centuries-old tradition stands out because property and wealth are passed from mother to daughter-not to sons. Women enjoy a higher status and more rights. Children take their mother’s surname, and girls are even encouraged to choose their own life partner.
Another bold move? Dowry is non-existent in Khasi customs. In fact, sometimes, girls propose to boys, breaking all stereotypical gender roles.
The couple often exchanges rings or betel nut bags instead of the typical big-fat-wedding rituals. With no dowry pressure and complete respect for women, Khasi culture empowers the bride like nowhere else.
Khasi and Jaintia tribes make up over 78% of Eastern Meghalaya’s population. With 1.4 million+ Khasi people in India, this progressive tradition challenges deep-rooted norms and celebrates equality.
In a world still catching up with women’s rights, the Khasi tribe is already leading the way-with love, respect, and tradition.
