British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's critically acclaimed film 'Santosh' has been denied certification by India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The board reportedly objected to its portrayal of misogyny, Islamophobia, and police violence, leading to a deadlock that may prevent its theatrical release in India.
Despite the film receiving approval at the script stage, the CBFC later demanded multiple edits, citing concerns over its depiction of the Indian police and social issues. The required changes, spanning several pages, were so extensive that Suri found it impossible to retain the film's essence while complying.
Suri called the decision "heartbreaking", expressing surprise that such themes were being flagged, given their prior representation in Indian cinema. Actress Shahana Goswami, who plays a lead role, also criticized the CBFC's demands, stating that the requested cuts would significantly alter the film.
'Santosh' premiered at Cannes, was the UK's official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards, and received a BAFTA nomination. However, due to censorship hurdles, it may never see a theatrical release in India.
