Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman implicated in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has urgently petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent his extradition to India. Rana asserts that, if extradited, he faces a high likelihood of torture due to his Muslim religion, Pakistani origin, and the nature of the charges against him.
In his plea, Rana expressed grave concerns, stating that without intervention, he "will soon be dead" following extradition. He highlighted his deteriorating health, including a 3.5 cm abdominal aortic aneurysm at immediate risk of rupture, Parkinson's disease with cognitive decline, and a mass suggestive of bladder cancer.
Previously, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana's review petition against extradition. President Donald Trump announced the approval of his extradition, labeling him "very evil" and emphasizing the need for justice in India.
Rana's connections to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) have been well-documented. His close association with David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the November 26, 2008, attacks in Mumbai, further implicates him in the tragic events that resulted in 166 deaths.
As the legal battle intensifies, the international community watches closely, weighing the demands of justice against concerns for human rights and due process.
