India revises retaliatory tariffs on U.S. at WTO!

India has revised its proposed retaliatory tariffs against the United States in response to the continuation of Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminium, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said in a communication released on July 10, 2025.

The revised list includes a proposed suspension of trade concessions, where India would impose additional customs duties on selected U.S. products. This move is intended to be equivalent in value to the duties the U.S. imposed on Indian exports due to the 25% and 10% tariffs on steel and aluminium respectively, which have been in place since 2018.

India had earlier submitted a similar list in 2019 but has now updated the scope and value of the proposed countermeasures. While the specific U.S. goods targeted were not publicly disclosed in the WTO communication, the intention is to recover trade losses stemming from the U.S. tariffs.

This marks an ongoing phase in the trade tensions between the two nations, even as both sides continue to negotiate toward a broader bilateral trade agreement.
