A striking celestial event unfolds on September 7–8, 2025, when the full “Corn Moon” slides into Earth’s deepest shadow, resulting in a total lunar eclipse familiarly known as a “blood moon.” During the eclipse, lasting over five hours, the Moon will spend around 82 minutes in totality, glowing in dusky reds and copper hues thanks to Rayleigh scattering the same atmospheric phenomenon that makes sunsets orange and red. Ushering sunlight through Earth’s atmosphere filters out shorter blue wavelengths, allowing only red light to reach and illuminate the Moon’s surface.
The eclipse will be fully visible across Asia and Western Australia, granting more than 6 billion people a front-row view. Parts of Europe and Africa will catch partial phases, while most of the Americas will miss it—but a livestream from Italy’s Virtual Telescope Project ensures global access.
This rare sky drama occurs when a full moon, Earth, and Sun align, with Earth blocking direct sunlight and its atmosphere subtly refracting the remaining red light onto the Moon a breathtaking, safe-to-watch natural wonder.
