India’s Parliament has two houses: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha-each with unique powers and responsibilities.
Lok Sabha, or the House of the People, is the lower house. It is directly elected by Indian citizens every five years. It has maximum 552 members (currently 543). This house plays a dominant role in legislation and financial matters. Only Lok Sabha can introduce Money Bills, and it can pass a no-confidence motion to remove the government.
On the other hand, Rajya Sabha, or the Council of States, is the upper house. It’s a permanent body-not dissolved-where 1/3rd members retire every 2 years. It has 250 seats max (currently 245), with 12 nominated by the President. Its members are elected by state assemblies. Rajya Sabha represents state interests and reviews bills passed by Lok Sabha.
While Lok Sabha holds more financial and executive power, Rajya Sabha balances federalism, bringing expertise and state perspectives to lawmaking.
This bicameral system ensures checks and balances and strengthens democracy.
