Amid rising diplomatic tensions following India’s Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has announced it will review potential security threats before deciding whether to send its national hockey team to India for the upcoming Asia Cup and Hockey World Cup.
According to a report in The Hindu, a senior official from the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) expressed apprehensions about the safety of Pakistani athletes, particularly in light of the current political climate. “Given recent developments, especially Operation Sindoor, we cannot take any risks with our players' safety,” the official noted.
While India is scheduled to host both tournaments, Pakistan's final decision will depend on a formal security clearance from the government and a detailed risk assessment by its security agencies.
The PHF also emphasized that sports should remain separate from politics, but acknowledged that the safety of athletes is non-negotiable. This development could further strain India-Pakistan sporting ties, already impacted by broader geopolitical tensions.
