On July 9, 2025, India is witnessing a major nationwide general strike led by ten central trade unions - excluding the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), which is affiliated with the Sangh. Workers across critical sectors such as banking, insurance, mining, construction, postal services, and transportation have pledged mass participation in protest against what they describe as “anti-worker” policies by the central government.
Union leaders say the strike is primarily aimed at opposing the government's amendments to 29 existing labour laws and the implementation of four consolidated labour codes. These changes, they argue, dilute workers’ rights related to wages, social security, occupational safety, and industrial relations.
The strike is also a broader signal of discontent with rising job insecurity, privatization of public sector units, weakening of collective bargaining mechanisms, and lack of consultation with trade unions.
With thousands expected to hit the streets, the July 9 strike reflects growing worker unrest and mounting pressure on the government to re-evaluate its labour reform strategy.
