Kolhapuri sandals, long known for their traditional charm and street affordability in India, have now reached international runways making a statement at the Milan Fashion Week. Once priced as low as ₹150, these handcrafted leather flats were showcased by Indian luxury brand Verandah, with runway versions reportedly priced around ₹1 lakh.
This transformation of the Kolhapuri from local markets to global fashion highlights the growing appreciation for Indian craftsmanship. Verandah’s collaboration with artisans and its sustainable, slow fashion approach brings attention not only to the cultural value of the footwear but also to the socioeconomic upliftment of local cobblers.
The sandals showcased were modernized with high-quality materials and contemporary silhouettes, yet retained the essence of their heritage. The collection aimed to blend Indian heritage with global luxury, demonstrating how indigenous products can be reimagined for elite markets.
This spotlight on Kolhapuris has also triggered conversations about protecting traditional crafts, fair compensation for artisans, and the potential for other Indian products to enter the global fashion spotlight.
