On August 14, 2025, the Supreme Court came down hard on Delhi-NCR civic authorities over the controversial relocation of stray dogs. Heading a three-judge bench, Justice Vikram Nath questioned, “How are authorities picking up stray dogs when…” - pointing to alleged procedural lapses and non-compliance with Parliament-framed laws .
The remarks follow an August 11 order from another bench directing all strays in Delhi-NCR to be moved to shelters within eight weeks, starting with facilities for 5,000 dogs. The court stressed that animals must be treated humanely and not returned to the streets.
Animal welfare groups have challenged the order, warning of overcrowding and health risks. Justice Nath said the ongoing stray-dog crisis persists due to administrative inaction, not a lack of legal framework. The bench has reserved judgment on interim pleas challenging the relocation directive.
