Starting April 8, 2025, the price of domestic LPG cylinders will increase by ₹50, as announced by Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the subsidised rate will go up from ₹500 to ₹550 per cylinder. For general consumers, the price will rise from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder. The government has also introduced a new system of reviewing LPG prices every fortnight to ensure dynamic pricing and quicker policy adjustments.
Minister Puri emphasized that the recent increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel is not aimed at burdening the public but rather to help oil marketing companies recover losses. These companies have reportedly incurred a loss of ₹43,000 crore due to subsidised gas prices offered under various welfare schemes.
Interestingly, this development follows a recent reduction in commercial LPG prices. Just a few days earlier, oil marketing companies slashed the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by ₹41. After this cut, the new commercial LPG price in Delhi stands at ₹1,762. This rollback came shortly after a ₹6 increase in commercial LPG prices in early March across major cities.
The price hike in domestic cylinders, especially for PMUY beneficiaries, is expected to spark debate, given the sensitive timing and ongoing economic challenges. However, the government maintains that the move is essential to balance fiscal burdens while continuing to support long-term subsidy structures.
