During the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus, marking their first interaction since Sheikh Hasina's removal from office. PM Modi emphasized the importance of avoiding rhetoric that could harm the relationship between the two countries and instead encouraged building a constructive and pragmatic partnership.
This meeting follows recent remarks by Yunus, who, during bilateral talks with China, described India’s Northeast as “landlocked” and positioned Bangladesh as the “guardian of ocean access” for the region. These comments sparked criticism from Indian leaders, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar countering that India’s Northeast serves as a crucial connectivity hub for BIMSTEC, given India’s extensive coastline and links with several BIMSTEC members.
PM Modi also addressed border security, stressing the need for strict enforcement to prevent illegal crossings, particularly at night. He highlighted the importance of stable and peaceful bilateral relations while raising concerns about the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus.
The Indian Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to a democratic and progressive Bangladesh while urging Yunus to maintain a positive and cooperative stance. During the talks, Bangladesh formally requested India to extradite Sheikh Hasina, who fled after facing massive student-led protests last August. PM Modi suggested that both nations use bilateral mechanisms to review their cooperation, focusing on stability and improved ties.
