"Main Character" Syndrome Is Ruining Our Friendships

We all love a good "main character" moment-romanticizing life, dressing for the plot, feeling like the world revolves around us. But when this aesthetic turns into a personality, friendships start feeling more like supporting roles than relationships.
"Main character syndrome" isn’t officially a diagnosis, but it’s a vibe: constantly centering conversations around yourself, turning every event into your personal storyline, and treating others like NPCs in your emotional journey. Harmless on screen. Exhausting in real life.
It shows up in subtle ways: not asking how your friend’s day was because yours had "so much drama." Hijacking group plans. Making every shared memory about your experience of it. Over time, it’s isolating-not just for others, but for you too.
In a world that constantly tells us to be the star, it’s radical to be part of an ensemble. The best friendships aren’t cinematic-they’re collaborative, messy, and mutual.
So maybe the next time you're tempted to narrate your life like a Netflix monologue, stop and ask: Am I even listening?
