A recent University College London study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, reveals that matching your personality with the right exercise style can increase enjoyment, adherence, and stress relief.
Out of 132 participants, those high in extraversion gravitated toward high‑energy, group‑based sessions—like HIIT, CrossFit, or spin—though they were slightly less consistent in completing the program. Individuals scoring high for neuroticism, linked to anxiety, preferred low‑pressure, solo routines (e.g., gentle home workouts or walking). They also experienced the most notable stress reduction.
Conscientious individuals—disciplined, organized, goal-oriented—consistently completed various workouts and maintained the best overall fitness, though they didn’t particularly favor one style over another . Agreeable people leaned toward cooperative, relaxed group activities (like walking clubs or partner workouts), while those high in openness enjoyed variety and novelty but often shied away from intense routines.
Notably, all participants who completed the eight‑week program—combining cycling and strength training—showed fitness gains, regardless of personality. Still, aligning workouts with personal traits may improve motivation, consistency, and mental health benefits like stress reduction.
Overall, personality-informed fitness plans present a promising path to more sustainable, enjoyable exercise habits—especially for those struggling with gym motivation.
