Residents across Delhi‑NCR were rattled twice this week by earthquakes emanating from nearby Jhajjar, Haryana. At 9:04 am on July 10, a 4.4‑magnitude quake struck at a depth of 10 km—its tremors felt in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, Merut, Hisar, and Panipat. Despite the strong jolt, no casualties or structural damage have been reported.
One of the closest locales, Girawar village near Jhajjar, experienced a sharp shake. Villagers, including farmers, shopkeepers, and schoolchildren, described a sudden, intense jolt that prompted mass evacuations—though the village thankfully escaped damage. Moments like a tea‑stall owner mistaking the quake for a heavy vehicle and children throwing notebooks in panic captured the widespread alarm.
The seismic activity continued with a 3.7‑magnitude tremor at 7:49 pm on July 11, again centred in Jhajjar. Though milder, the tremor was still felt across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad for the second day in a row.
Delhi‑NCR sits in Seismic Zone IV, a high‑risk area with multiple fault lines—Delhi‑Haridwar Ridge, Sohna, Moradabad, and Yamuna lineaments—and proximity to the Himalayas exacerbating its vulnerability. Authorities advise preparedness and adherence to safety protocols amid recurrent seismic activity.
