The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song “Vande Mataram” across India, recognising its enduring significance in the country’s cultural and political history.
Crafted in Sanskrit (or Sanskritised Bengali) by Bankimchandra Chatterji, Vande Mataram has long held a special place in India’s freedom struggle and national identity. The song was accorded national song status by the Constituent Assembly and is given equal respect alongside the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
As part of the celebrations, various programmes - ranging from cultural performances and recitations to educational events - will be rolled out nationwide. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw cited the song’s pivotal role in uniting people during colonial rule, emphasising its status as a rallying cry for patriotism.
With its stirring verses and historical resonance, Vande Mataram continues to inspire generations—its 150-year commemoration intended to rekindle collective pride in India’s heritage.
