New ‘Zombie’ Fungus Named After Sir David Attenborough Infects Irish Cave Spiders

In a remarkable discovery, scientists have identified a new fungal species, Gibellula attenboroughii, named in honor of Sir David Attenborough, which infects and manipulates cave-dwelling spiders in Ireland, effectively turning them into "zombies. "

The initial observation occurred during the filming of the BBC's Winterwatch series in 2021, when researchers noticed an orb-weaving cave spider (Metellina merianae) exhibiting unusual behavior. Upon investigation, they found that the spider was infected by an unknown fungus. Further studies revealed that this fungus compels the spiders to abandon their typical secluded habitats and move to exposed positions on cave walls or ceilings. Once there, the spiders succumb to the infection, allowing the fungus to grow and release spores, thereby increasing the likelihood of infecting other spiders.

This manipulation mirrors the behavior seen in "zombie ants" infected by the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, where the host's actions are altered to favor the parasite's reproductive cycle. In the case of Gibellula attenboroughii, the infected spiders' movement to elevated, open areas facilitates optimal spore dispersal, enhancing the fungus's propagation.

The naming of this new species pays tribute to Sir David Attenborough's lifelong dedication to natural history and his efforts to raise awareness about the wonders of the natural world. Dr. Harry Evans, Emeritus Fellow at CABI and lead researcher, stated, "It seems fitting to name this 'zombie'-creating fungus after Sir David, who has inspired so many to explore and appreciate nature."

This discovery not only highlights the complex interactions between parasites and their hosts but also underscores the rich biodiversity present in Ireland's cave ecosystems. Further research is needed to understand the full extent of Gibellula attenboroughii's impact on spider populations and its ecological role within these subterranean environments.
