Each spring, Narcisse, Manitoba, hosts the world's largest snake mating ritual at the Narcisse Snake Dens. Tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerge from limestone sinkholes after hibernation, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Males surface first, awaiting females who trigger frenzied “mating balls” where dozens compete, some mimicking females to outsmart rivals. The Interlake region's limestone crevices and wetlands provide ideal hibernation and feeding grounds.
This natural phenomenon draws global tourists, who observe from viewing platforms along a 3-km trail, best visited in late April to mid-May. Conservation efforts, including fencing and tunnels, protect snakes from road mortality. Unlike human honeymoons, Narcisse's reptilian romance is a scaly, writhing affair, showcasing nature’s raw evolutionary dance.
