The Telangana High Court has halted the clearing of a 400-acre green cover near the University of Hyderabad (UoH) until its next hearing. This decision follows widespread protests from students, faculty, and environmentalists against the state government's plan to auction the land in Kancha Gachibowli for IT park development.
Protesters argue that despite lacking official forest status, the land serves as a crucial ecological hub. The state's Advocate General countered that the land was transferred to a private company in 2003 and is designated for industrial use.
Tensions escalated when police forcefully dispersed protesters, leading to student boycotts and calls for government intervention. UoH's Vice-Chancellor has urged for the legal transfer of the land to the university to prevent further encroachment. With the High Court set to rule, the fate of this green expanse remains uncertain.
