Manipur's New Zoveng village in Churachandpur has been declared a containment zone after multiple rabies cases were detected, prompting urgent action from district authorities. District Magistrate Dharun Kumar has imposed strict movement restrictions on domesticated pets and stray dogs, ordering their immediate identification and vaccination.
As part of containment measures, officials will conduct door-to-door health check-ups and surveillance to prevent the virus from spreading. The sale and transport of dogs have been banned, and violators will face penal action.
Rabies remains a serious public health threat in India, with a Lancet study revealing that 75% of all animal bites come from dogs, leading to approximately 5,700 deaths annually. Alarmingly, a significant portion of victims fail to complete their full anti-rabies vaccination course.
Authorities are urging strict compliance to contain the outbreak and prevent further fatalities.
