In a recent article published by The Indian Express, the spotlight turned to veteran actress Jaya Bachchan’s illustrious career, highlighting how her remarkable body of work has often been eclipsed by the towering legacy of her husband, Amitabh Bachchan.
While Amitabh Bachchan is one of Indian cinmea's most iconic figures, it is Jaya Bachchan who has delivered more nuanced and consistent performances over the decades. Starting her career with Satyajit Ray’s 'Mahanagar' and gaining widespread recognition with 'Guddi' in 1971, Jaya carved a space for herself as a powerful actor who championed realism and emotional depth. Her roles in films like 'Abhimaan', 'Mili', 'Koshish', and 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa' showcased a range rarely matched, especially during a time when commercial cinema was dominated by male-centric narratives.
Yet, Jaya Bachchan has remained underappreciated, often viewed through the lens of being "Amitabh Bachchan’s wife" rather than as a formidable talent in her own right. lAmitabh has become a "great tree" whose immense shadow has inadvertently obscured the achievements of others in his family, including Jaya's.
