What if your furniture could grow instead of being built? In Mumbai, architects Bhakti Loonawat and Suyash Sawant are proving it’s possible. Through their startup Anomalia, the duo creates elegant yet sustainable furniture made from mycelium — the root network of mushrooms.
The concept sounds unusual, but it’s both lightweight and strong. A single console can hold up to 80 kg yet weighs only a fraction of conventional furniture. Even better, once discarded, it biodegrades within 180 days, returning harmlessly to the soil.
Their designs include blocks, tables, stools, textiles, and even leather alternatives, all grown using agricultural waste that would otherwise be burned, adding to pollution. This innovation not only prevents waste but also redefines eco-luxury design.
From showcasing pieces at the Venice Biennale to building facades in Seoul, Anomalia’s fungi-based creations are gaining global attention. While production is small and carefully scaled, the couple dreams big — one day, of growing entire homes from fungi.
By blending science, sustainability, and design, they’re proving that the future of furniture might just lie in mushrooms.
