Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a serious mental health condition where individuals become obsessively focused on perceived flaws in their appearance - flaws that are often unnoticeable to others. This condition can cause deep emotional distress, social isolation, and even lead to depression or suicidal thoughts.
People with BDD may spend hours checking mirrors, seeking reassurance, or undergoing cosmetic procedures, yet rarely feel satisfied. The disorder typically begins in adolescence and affects both men and women. Common concerns include facial features, skin, body build, or hair.
Although the exact cause is unknown, risk factors include genetics, low self-esteem, trauma, and social pressures. Fortunately, BDD is treatable through cognitive behavioral therapy and medications.
Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid worsening symptoms. If left untreated, BDD can lead to severe complications including anxiety, substance abuse, and self-harm. If you or someone you know shows symptoms, seeking professional help is essential.
