Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed willingness to engage in "meaningful dialogue" with India, during a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on June 25, 2025. Sharif highlighted the need for calm and engagement following the tense aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
However, India remains firm on its red lines. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have reiterated that any discussions with Pakistan will be strictly limited to two core issues: terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil and the return of Pakistan‑Occupied Kashmir (PoK) . This stance echoes Modi’s May 2025 televised address, where he emphasized that "terror and talks cannot happen together," and only PoK and terrorism will feature in dialogue with Pakistan.
This diplomatic exchange unfolds in the broader context of recent troop reductions along the India‑Pakistan border and ongoing global concerns about spillovers from regional terrorist activities . As Sharif seeks to broaden the discussion, India remains unyielding on a narrow, security-focused agenda.
