On July 25, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a historic milestone: completing 4,078 consecutive days in office, officially surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,077 uninterrupted days from January 24, 1966 through March 24, 1977. With this achievement, Modi now holds the position of second longest continuously serving Prime Minister in India’s history, trailing only Jawaharlal Nehru.
Officials highlighted several other distinctions: he is the first non‑Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and be re‑elected twice with a majority, and the longest‑serving PM from a non‑Hindi‑speaking state. Modi has also become the only leader in Indian democratic history to win six consecutive elections - three as Gujarat’s chief minister (2002, 2007, 2012) and three as central PM (2014, 2019, 2024).
While Modi now surpasses Indira Gandhi's continuous tally, Jawaharlal Nehru still holds the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure of 16 years and 286 days.
