Sikkim, a small northeastern state in India, made history by becoming the world’s first fully organic state in 2020.
The state now boasts a 100% organic farming policy, eliminating the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides across its 76,000 hectares of cultivated land.
This bold move, which started in 2003, has not only preserved the delicate Himalayan ecosystem but also set an example of sustainable living.
The shift to organic farming has improved soil health, restored biodiversity, and enhanced crop quality while benefiting both the environment and the local economy.
In addition to its organic farming policies, Sikkim has taken steps to reduce plastic pollution by introducing bamboo bottles as eco-friendly alternatives.
These bottles are used in hotels, homestays, and tourist spots, reducing plastic waste and supporting local artisans. Sikkim's eco-conscious initiatives, including plastic bans and promoting renewable energy, serve as a global model for sustainable development.
