A recent study suggests that cold feet and a sensation of heaviness in the legs may indicate the presence of varicose veins.
These veins, which are swollen, twisted, and enlarged, often occur due to improper functioning of deep or superficial veins and perforator veins, which link the two venous systems in the legs.
The condition affects between 2-30% of adults, with women being at higher risk.
Common symptoms of varicose veins include aching, throbbing, itching, restlessness, swelling, and muscle cramps. In severe cases, leg ulcers may develop. The study, published in the journal Open Heart, found that individuals with moderate to severe cold hypersensitivity in their feet were significantly more likely to have varicose veins.
Additionally, people with varicose veins often reported feelings of leg heaviness. Jobs that involve prolonged standing were also found to increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
While the study observed these connections, it couldn't establish direct causation.
