On Tuesday, July 15, during repair work on a decade-old bridge in Ajaj village, Mangrol taluka, Gujarat, a section of the slab collapsed, sending construction machinery and workers into the river below. Thankfully, no casualties were reported .
The bridge, linking Keshod to Madhavpur, had been identified as structurally dilapidated and slated for controlled demolition - a fact confirmed by local authorities . The incident triggered immediate inspections across the region's aging infrastructure.
This mishap comes just six days after the fatal Gambhira bridge collapse near Vadodara on July 9, which led to 20 deaths and one person still missing . That tragedy exposed longstanding neglect of bridge safety, with reports citing ignored warning letters since 2021 .
Between the two incidents, Gujarat has now faced multiple bridge failures within a week, spotlighting alarming infrastructure neglect that risks public safety. While the Junagadh incident ended fortunately, it underscores the urgent need for systematic inspections, timely repairs, and enhanced quality control across the state’s bridge network.
