The Delhi Metro is stepping up passenger safety with a new life-saving feature. After a tragic incident in December 2023 where a 35-year-old woman died when her saree got stuck in a closing train door, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced an "anti-drag" system.
This upgraded mechanism can detect even small obstructions-like clothes, bags, or body parts-even if the train doors appear shut. If the system senses pressure at the doors, it automatically triggers an emergency brake, stopping the train before an accident can occur.
The sensor’s threshold has been improved, now detecting objects as thin as 7mm (down from 15mm). DMRC has already retrofitted one train with the anti-drag feature and plans to install it on four more over the next year or two. Older metro lines will be prioritised, as newer ones like the Pink and Magenta lines already have platform screen doors (PSDs).
This innovation marks a significant safety leap for Delhi Metro and could be a game-changer in preventing future accidents.
