Shock at India's top tech Institute: IIT Bombay student dies by Suicide!

A tragic incident unfolded at IIT Bombay on the early hours of August 2, 2025, when Rohit Sinha, a 22‑26 year old student from Delhi, reportedly jumped from the 10th-floor terrace of Hostel 17 around 2:30 AM. He was pursuing a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, and witnesses say he had just ordered food with friends before stepping outside .

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The Mumbai Police registered an Accidental Death Report, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. No suicide note has been found, and police are interviewing his hostelmates for context on his mental condition.

IIT Bombay issued a statement expressing deep grief and confirmed it is cooperating with authorities. An independent inquiry is expected to explore whether any academic or psychological pressures contributed.

The incident adds to increasing concerns over student mental health and campus safety at elite Indian institutions. Helplines and counselling services are being re-emphasized across IIT campuses nationwide.
