Indian street food is rapidly emerging as a potent instrument of cultural diplomacy, captivating global audiences and enhancing India's soft power. From bustling Indian streets to international summits, these flavorful dishes are forging connections that transcend traditional diplomatic channels.
At the 2025 G20 Summit, Indian street food took center stage, offering delegates a taste of the country's rich culinary heritage. Japanese Ambassador Keiichi Ono's enthusiastic endorsement of Bihar's litti chokha, expressed in Bhojpuri, resonated widely on social media, exemplifying the global appeal of India's regional cuisines. Similarly, Italian Ambassador Vincenzo De Luca's fondness for South Indian staples like dosa and idli highlights the universal charm of these dishes.
The global proliferation of Indian street food is further propelled by the Indian diaspora, which has introduced these flavors to cities worldwide. Establishments like Dosa Bros in the U.S. and Horn OK Please in London have successfully brought authentic Indian street food to international audiences, thanks to the exposure created by tourism.
Recognizing the diplomatic potential of its cuisine, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has initiated efforts to showcase India's food diversity on the world stage. By organizing culinary events and festivals, the ICCR aims to use Indian cuisine as a means to foster cultural exchange and strengthen international relationships.
