Tesla has finally arrived in India, opening its first-ever showroom today at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex. The EV giant, led by Elon Musk, revealed that the Model Y will cost ₹61 lakh on-road, with a rear-wheel drive variant priced at ₹59.89 lakh.
The announcement follows a teaser on Tesla India’s official X handle last week that read “Coming soon.” This move marks a significant moment for India’s electric vehicle landscape, though manufacturing is still off the table for now.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomed Tesla, calling it “not just a car company but a symbol of innovation and sustainability.”
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, however, confirmed that Tesla has no plans to manufacture in India, choosing to sell imported vehicles through showrooms instead. While import duties remain a challenge, India’s new EV policy with duty cuts and incentives could change that soon.
Earlier this year, Tesla began hiring in India and CEO Musk even had a conversation with PM Modi about future collaborations. With today’s launch, Tesla begins its journey in one of the world’s most dynamic automotive markets.
