In the animal kingdom, staying the same gender for life is not always the rule. Several marine species have the incredible ability to change their gender during their lifetime. This natural process helps them improve survival chances and maintain balance within their groups.
One of the most popular examples is the clownfish, known from the movie Finding Nemo. In a clownfish group, the largest fish becomes the female. If she dies, the dominant male transforms into a female to continue reproduction.
Another fascinating species is the wrasse fish, which usually starts life as a female. When the dominant male disappears, the strongest female changes into a male, often showing noticeable changes in colour, size, and behaviour.
Similarly, groupers begin life as females and later transform into males as they grow older. Even creatures like oysters can switch genders multiple times depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and food supply.
Sea snails called slipper limpets also change gender as they grow, ensuring successful reproduction.
