A heated online debate sparked by Elon Musk and Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has left students wondering: which subject-maths or physics-makes a better entrepreneur? Durov argued for maths, citing its power to build logic and self-reliance. Musk responded, backing “physics (with math)” and emphasized the importance of clear reasoning over formal degrees.
Both agree on one core idea: it’s not about the subject, but about how you think.
Experts in India echo this. Gopal Sharma from PhysicsWallah says entrepreneurship begins with understanding people. Atul Kumar adds that maths teaches creative problem-solving, crucial for startup success.
Meanwhile, neuroscience backs a wider view. Interdisciplinary learners—those who blend music, design, science, and writing—develop better decision-making abilities. This is the brainpower startups thrive on.
The New Education Policy (NEP 2020) is already encouraging this shift. Students are no longer limited to rigid subject paths. Whether it's economics, psychology, or tech, the future entrepreneur needs to explore across disciplines.
The verdict? There’s no perfect subject. The real startup spark comes from curiosity, problem-solving, and the courage to try something new.
