Your phone battery drops to 5% while travelling, and that free USB charging port at the airport feels like a lifesaver. But what if that one small decision opens the door to hackers?
Cyber experts warn against using public charging ports due to a growing threat called “juice jacking.” In this attack, hackers tamper with USB ports or cables to secretly steal data or install malware on your phone while it charges. Since USB cables transfer both power and data, attackers can access photos, messages, passwords, and even banking apps - without you noticing.
The risk increases if you unlock your phone while it’s plugged in. Some advanced attacks can even bypass “charge-only” settings, making users believe they’re safe when they’re not. While random travellers may not always be targeted, people carrying sensitive personal or financial data face higher risks.
Experts recommend carrying your own charger or power bank, avoiding unknown USB cables, and never unlocking your phone while charging in public.
That “free charge” could cost you your privacy - or worse, your money.
