At an event in South Korea, US President Donald Trump expressed strong admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as “the nicest-looking guy” and “tough as hell” while signalling that a trade deal between the United States and India is forthcoming.
Trump said: “I’m doing a trade deal with India… I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi. We have a great relationship.” He highlighted that negotiations are in advanced stages, with US-Indian discussions expected to address high tariffs and market access.
The remarks mark a pivot from prior tensions - where Trump had criticised India’s import tariffs and imposed steep duties - toward a more positive tone emphasizing economic partnership. Analysts say the proposed agreement could reshape trade dynamics between the two major economies, especially in sectors like agriculture, energy and technology. The timing of these comments, ahead of the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, underscores the strategic importance Washington assigns to its relationship with New Delhi.
