Apple’s iPhone 15 series introduced a universal USB-C charging port, ending the era of Lightning cables. While this makes switching between Android and Apple devices easier, reports indicate a new overheating issue when Android USB-C chargers are used with iPhone 15 models.
Apple Stores in China, including locations in Foshan, Guangdong Province, have advised customers not to use Android chargers, citing differences in pin arrangements. iPhone USB-C connectors have slightly larger gaps between the 9-pin and 11-pin arrangements, which can cause heat build-up with incompatible cables. Multiple stores across China have issued similar warnings, raising safety concerns among users.
Although Apple has not officially confirmed the advisory, its guidelines emphasize using Apple-branded or certified third-party cables that comply with USB 2.0 or later standards and local safety regulations. Non-compliant chargers may pose serious risks, including fire hazards, injury, or even death. Users can still use third-party cables if they meet these standards.
The debate continues on whether the warning reflects genuine safety risks or Apple’s strategy to promote its own accessories. For now, iPhone 15 owners should exercise caution and prefer Apple-certified USB-C chargers to ensure safe and efficient charging.
