India is the world’s largest democracy-and at the heart of it are two important institutions: the President and the Lok Sabha.
The President of India is known as the first citizen of the country. Though the role is mostly ceremonial, the President holds significant powers in law-making, appointments, and emergencies. Elected every five years by an electoral college of MPs and MLAs, the President lives in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. With powers in areas like military, finance, and justice, the President represents the nation on global platforms and signs every bill into law.
The Lok Sabha is the lower house of Parliament, also called the House of the People. It has 543 elected members, chosen directly by Indian citizens. These MPs represent various constituencies across states. The Lok Sabha makes laws, passes budgets, and holds the power to question or even remove the government through a no-confidence motion.
Together, the President ensures constitutional order, while the Lok Sabha ensures people’s voice is heard. This system of checks and balances is what keeps India’s democracy strong and stable.
