You open your phone for five minutes. Somehow, it turns into forty. You don’t remember what you watched, but you kept scrolling anyway. It feels like you’ve lost focus, but that’s not really true.
Your attention span isn’t broken. It’s being trained.
Every app you use is designed to keep you there as long as possible. Not to help you learn, not to add value, just to hold your attention. Because the longer you stay, the more you see, and the more profitable you become. That’s why content today is faster, louder, and endless. There’s always another video, another post, another swipe.
Over time, your brain adapts to this pattern. It gets used to quick bursts of stimulation instead of deep focus. So when you try to concentrate on something slower, like studying or reading it feels difficult. Not because you’re incapable, but because you’ve been conditioned to switch attention constantly.
This creates a loop. You scroll, get a small dopamine hit, lose interest, and scroll again. It never fully satisfies you, but it keeps you hooked.
The solution isn’t quitting everything. It’s becoming aware. Ask yourself why you opened the app. Notice when you’re scrolling without purpose. Because once you start protecting your attention, you realize something important, most of what you consume isn’t actually worth it.
