Pandit Vishnu Rajoria, head of Madhya Pradesh's Parshuram Kalyan Board and a cabinet minister, has sparked controversy by proposing a ₹1 lakh reward for Brahmin couples who have four children. Speaking at an event in Indore, Rajoria argued that larger families within the Brahmin community are necessary to "protect Sanatana Dharma."
Declaring it "mandatory" for Brahmin couples to produce four children, he claimed this was essential for strengthening religious values and ensuring societal balance, with roles divided among children for family support, earning, and pursuing spiritual paths.
Rajoria's remarks, made in a personal capacity, have drawn sharp criticism for promoting a demographic agenda seen by some as divisive and regressive. Critics also questioned the practicality of the scheme, pointing out the financial burden on families in a country grappling with economic disparity. However, Rajoria dismissed these concerns, asserting that India's progress and governance ensure adequate resources for all, citing a reported 25 crore people lifted out of poverty.
This proposal comes amid debates over population policies. While Andhra Pradesh recently relaxed its two-child norm due to declining fertility rates, states like Uttar Pradesh are considering stricter population control laws.
Rajoria's assertion that larger Brahmin families are vital to the nation's cultural and spiritual fabric has raised eyebrows, with opponents viewing it as a bid to stoke religious and caste-based sentiment. His remarks highlight the ongoing tensions between cultural preservation and modern policy frameworks in India.
