In the early days of Indian cinema, a film dared to challenge the colonial authority, becoming the first Indian film to face a ban. This was Bhakta Vidhur, a silent film released in 1921.
The film, based on a mythological story, depicted the life of Vidura, a wise counsellor to the Kuru kings. However, the actor portraying Vidura bore a striking resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi, the iconic leader of the Indian independence movement. This unintentional resemblance, coupled with the film's subtle undertones of social and political commentary, caught the attention of the British colonial government.
The British authorities, fearing that the film might ignite nationalist sentiments and inspire resistance, decided to ban it. The censor board banned the film saying "We know what you are doing. It is not Vidur. We cannot allow it to be released.” The film's simple yet powerful narrative, combined with the actor's striking resemblance to Gandhi, made it a potent symbol of defiance against colonial authority.
While Bhakta Vidhur was the first Indian film to face a ban, it was not the last. Over the decades, Indian cinema has witnessed numerous instances of censorship, often driven by political, social, and religious concerns. However, the spirit of free expression and artistic liberty has continued to inspire filmmakers to push boundaries and challenge the status quo.
