Sun protection is non-negotiable when it comes to skincare, with countless studies proving the effectiveness of traditional sunscreen. However, a new product is making waves in the beauty industry—drinkable sunscreen. These supplements, marketed as an internal shield against UV damage, claim to work from within by enhancing the body’s defense against harmful rays.
Unlike conventional SPF lotions and creams that create a physical barrier on the skin, drinkable sunscreens contain a blend of antioxidants, vitamins, and plant extracts aimed at reducing sun-induced damage. Ingredients like polypodium leucotomos, astaxanthin, and lycopene are known to support skin health and may help counteract oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. However, dermatologists emphasize that these supplements do not block UV rays and should never be used as a replacement for topical sunscreen.
The concept isn't entirely new—similar products have surfaced before, some even facing legal scrutiny due to misleading claims. The first-ever "drinkable sunscreen" brand in the U.S. was sued for making unverified promises about UV protection. While India’s market now offers its own version with different ingredients, experts caution consumers to approach these products as a supplement to, not a substitute for, traditional sun protection methods.
For those curious about drinkable sunscreen, it may offer added skin benefits but should always be paired with broad-spectrum SPF, protective clothing, and smart sun habits to ensure complete protection.
