Pune has witnessed an alarming surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), with 111 reported cases and one suspected fatality in Solapur. At least 17 patients are on ventilators, while seven have recovered and been discharged. Medical experts have expressed growing concerns over the outbreak, urging people to be cautious about their diet and hygiene.
Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat from AIIMS Delhi identified gastroenteritis as a key trigger for GBS, linking it to contaminated food and water. "Avoid eating out and ensure food is properly stored," she advised, emphasizing that dairy products like paneer and cheese, along with improperly stored rice, pose a risk due to bacterial contamination. She also recommended consuming vitamin C-rich foods to strengthen immunity.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, causing weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. It often follows an infection, including respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal infections, or even Covid-19. The current outbreak is progressing rapidly, with some patients requiring ventilators within just 2-3 days.
Common symptoms include tingling in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, difficulty walking, and in severe cases, breathing difficulties. Immediate hospitalization is necessary if symptoms appear, as early intervention can improve recovery chances.
As GBS cases continue to rise, experts urge strict hygiene measures, safe food practices, and timely medical attention for any unusual symptoms.
