India's Parliament has two distinct colours, red for the Rajya Sabha and green for the Lok Sabha which have deep historical and symbolic meanings. These colours were retained in the new Parliament building in 2023, preserving institutional tradition.
What Do These Colours Represent?
1. Red in the Rajya Sabha: Red symbolizes power, prestige, and wisdom. It represents the Rajya Sabha’s role as a revising chamber, where experienced politicians and experts carefully review laws.
2. Green in the Lok Sabha: Green symbolizes growth, energy, and a connection to the people. The Lok Sabha, where elected representatives debate and pass laws, reflects the voice of India’s citizens.
Inspired by British Parliament
India's Parliament follows the British model, where the House of Lords is red and the House of Commons is green. Other countries like Australia and Canada also use this system.
The new Parliament building continues this tradition, with additional cultural elements:
1. Peacock motifs in the Lok Sabha (symbolizing vibrancy)
2. Lotus designs in the Rajya Sabha (symbolizing wisdom)
3. Banyan tree theme in the central lounge (representing democracy)
These colours remind us that Parliament is more than politics- it is a place of tradition, balance, and democracy.
