Himachal Pradesh is on high alert as the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) has issued an orange alert for possible avalanches in the high-altitude regions of Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti. The warning comes after fresh snowfall hit several parts of the state, worsening conditions in remote areas.
Since Friday evening, snowfall has been recorded in multiple locations. The tribal areas of Lahaul-Spiti saw Gondla receive 8 cm of snow, Kukumseri 4.2 cm, and Kalpa in Kinnaur 2 cm. The meteorological department has also predicted continued wet weather until Thursday, raising concerns over further disruptions.
The heavy snow has made life particularly difficult for tribal communities in Chamba's Pangi Valley, where road closures have cut off access to essential services. In a desperate attempt to seek medical help, villagers have resorted to carrying patients on palanquins. Recently, a patient named Sham Singh from Punto village had to be transported to Civil Hospital in Killar this way. Similarly, villagers from Hudan panchayat carried two critically ill patients, Sher Singh and Hira Lal, on their backs to reach medical facilities.
Adding to the weather challenges, several areas across Himachal Pradesh have experienced heavy rain. Kalpa recorded 22.6 mm of rainfall, Manali 18 mm, Kotkhai 16.1 mm, and Shimla 8.2 mm. The ongoing wet spell may lead to more roadblocks and heightened avalanche risks.
Authorities are urging residents and travelers to exercise extreme caution in affected regions. With the situation evolving, it is crucial for those in high-altitude areas to stay updated on alerts and follow safety advisories.
