India’s new Parliament building, inaugurated on May 28, 2023, is a modern marvel blending tradition, technology, and sustainability. Part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, it replaces the nearly 100-year-old colonial-era structure to accommodate a growing democracy.
Shaped like a triangle, the new design reflects sacred geometry and allows optimal use of space. It can now seat 888 Lok Sabha members and 384 Rajya Sabha members, ready for future expansion.
Eco-friendly features make this building 30% more energy-efficient, with rainwater harvesting, solar energy, and recycled water systems. It’s also earthquake-resistant, built to last 150 years.
The Lok Sabha chamber has a majestic peacock-themed interior, while the Rajya Sabha showcases elegant lotus motifs. A unique Sengol sceptre, gifted to Nehru in 1947, now stands beside the Speaker’s podium-symbolizing India’s independence.
Materials were sourced from across India: sandstone from Rajasthan, carpets from Uttar Pradesh, and woodwork by artisans from Nagpur and Mumbai-celebrating India’s unity in diversity.
It even houses a Foucault pendulum to display Earth’s rotation and has cultural galleries, guardian animal statues, and the 6.5-meter Lion Capital crowning its roof.
This Parliament isn’t just a building-it’s the architectural symbol of New India.
